Ultrasounds at Midwives Maashaven
During your pregnancy we offer a number of standard ultrasounds. These are the vitality ultrasound, term ultrasound, 13-week ultrasound and 20-week ultrasound. Sometimes it is necessary to make extra ultrasounds, for example to check the growth or position of your baby. These medical ultrasounds are all reimbursed by your health insurance.
Below we briefly explain what you can expect from the different ultrasounds.
Vitality ultrasound
A first look at your baby
From 7-8 weeks of pregnancy you can have your first ultrasound: the vitality ultrasound. During this ultrasound we will check whether you are pregnant, whether your baby is properly in the womb and whether the heart is beating. We also make an initial estimate of the due date. Because your baby is still very small, we cannot yet determine the exact date.
This ultrasound is a special moment when you can see your little one for the first time.
Term ultrasound
determining your due date
The term ultrasound is done between 10 and 12 weeks of your pregnancy. During this ultrasound, we measure the size of your baby to determine how far along you are and calculate your due date.
In addition, we look at whether you are expecting a single or multiple births. This survey will give you a clearer picture of what to expect in the coming months.
13 week ultrasound
Early research on your baby's health
At the 13-week ultrasound, we will check whether your baby has any physical abnormalities. Some serious abnormalities can be detected as early as 13 weeks. This ultrasound is not mandatory, it is your choice whether you want to have it done.
If you opt for the 13-week ultrasound, you are participating in a scientific study: the IMITAS study.

20-week ultrasound
More detailed research on your baby
The 20-week ultrasound is a specialized examination in which we look at physical abnormalities in your baby. Because your baby is now bigger, we can see much more details than at the 13-week ultrasound. Just like the 13-week ultrasound, the 20-week ultrasound is optional, so it is entirely your choice.

Growth ultrasound
Controlling your baby's growth
During your pregnancy, we will discuss together whether a growth ultrasound is necessary for you and whether you want one. Sometimes it is necessary to make several growth ultrasounds, for example if you had a child in the past that was too big or too small, or if we suspect that this is the case in your current pregnancy.
If it is necessary to make a growth ultrasound, we will go through this with you and schedule it for you at the practice.

Position ultrasound
Checking your baby's position
At the end of your pregnancy, we may have doubts about the position of your baby. In that case, we will schedule a position ultrasound for you, so that we can check how your baby is lying in your belly.
We discuss everything with you and make sure you are well informed. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us!
