The maternity week

Congratulations, you gave birth! The first week after birth is called the maternity week. During this period, we will come to your home, together with the maternity nurse, to support you and your baby.

Our care in the maternity week

We as midwives are responsible for your maternity period. Do you have questions or problems, for example with feeding? Then the maternity nurse consults with us and we make a plan together.

In the maternity week:

We visit several times.

We have telephone contact.

We are available 24/7 for emergencies.

4 pairs of socks

After 8 days , we close the maternity week together with the maternity nurse. The care for your baby will then be transferred to the child health clinic (CJG). They monitor the growth and development of your child and give advice on nutrition and vaccinations. The GP remains available for medical questions about you and your baby.

Good to know: We remain available by phone for questions up to 6 weeks after the birth .

Leaflet: just gave birth, the first 6 weeks after giving birth.

Important things after birth

Vitamin K and D

Are you fully breastfeeding? Then your baby needs extra vitamins:

Vitamin K: from day 8 to 3 months, 150 micrograms per day.

Vitamin D: from day 8, 10 micrograms daily, until your child is 4 years old.

Breastfeeding or bottle feeding?

Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is the best food for your baby. It contains all the nutrients your baby needs and helps protect against infections and allergies.

Benefits for you:

Faster recovery after childbirth.

Less blood loss.

Can help to gain weight.

Reduces the risk of certain diseases, such as breast and ovarian cancer.

Breastfeeding every week is a bonus, but do what feels right for you and your baby.

Bottle feeding

💡 Handige tips:

Buy at least 2 bottles and a pack of food for newborns (0-6 months).

The first few days, your baby will receive small amounts. The maternity nurse will help you build up.

Bottle feeding is given about 7-8 times per 24 hours.

Your baby should not sleep for more than 4 hours in a row without feeding for the first few days.

Monitors your baby's growth and development.

Gives vaccinations (if you choose to).

Offers advice on care and upbringing.

Heel prick: checks for rare, hereditary disorders.
