The maternity week
Congratulations, you have given birth! The first week after the birth is called the maternity week. During this period, we will visit you at home, together with the maternity care assistant, to support you and your baby.
Our care in the maternity week
We as midwives are responsible for your maternity period. Do you have questions or problems, for example with feeding? Then the maternity nurse consults with us and we make a plan together.

After 8 days, we will close the maternity week together with the maternity care team. The care for your baby will then be taken over by the child health clinic (CJG). They will monitor your child’s growth and development and provide advice on feeding and vaccinations. The general practitioner will remain available for medical questions about you and your baby.
Good to know: We remain available by phone for questions up to 6 weeks after the birth.
Leaflet: Just gave birth – the first 6 weeks after giving birth.

Breastfeeding or bottle feeding?
Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding is the best nutrition for your baby. It contains all the nutrients your baby needs and helps protect against infections and allergies.
Benefits for you as a mom:
Faster recovery after childbirth.
Less blood loss.
Can help to gain weight.
Reduces the risk of certain diseases, such as breast and ovarian cancer.
Every week of breastfeeding is a bonus, but above all, do what feels right for you and your baby.
Bottle feeding
💡 Handige tips:
Purchase at least 2 bottles and a pack of formula for newborns (0–6 months).
During the first few days, your baby will receive small amounts. The maternity care assistant will help you build this up.
You feed formula approximately 7–8 times per 24 hours.
Your baby should not sleep for more than 4 hours in a row without feeding for the first few days.

Monitors your baby's growth and development.
Gives vaccinations (if you choose to).
Offers advice on care and upbringing.
Heelprik (Heel prick test): screens for rare, hereditary conditions.
